David Cook a Convicted murderer out on licence strangled his next door neighbour, 64, with TV flex cord...Still think we Don't need the Death Penalty?

A convicted killer jailed for life for strangling a woman murdered his next-door neighbour after his release into the community, a jury heard today.

David Cook, 65, of Rhymney, South Wales, beat neighbour Leonard Hill, 64, senseless before throttling him with a TV flex.

Cook carried out the violent killing in June last year when next-door neighbour Mr Hill paid him a visit.

Afterwards Cook ransacked his neighbour’s bungalow, stealing his wallet before going to a nearby pub for a drink with locals.

The murder last year was chillingly similar to the strangulation of Sunday school teacher Beryl Maynard in 1987.

A jury at Newport Crown Court heard today that Cook used a dressing gown cord and 'strangled her and killed her'.

They also heard that Cook had convictions for two violent burglaries in the early 1980s.

In one he broke into a couple's home with another man, carrying a Stanley knife and a carving knife, woke them up and tied and gagged them before stealing cash.

On another occasion Cook forced his way into the home of an 80-year-old man and bound and gagged him before stealing cash.

In the case of the later murder, Cook had replied to an advert for prison penpals in a Christian magazine while in jail.

On his release he was invited to dine with his victim's family but months later forced his way into her home at night when he needed cash. Read More
