Mexican bar shootout, 15 Dead

(Reuters) - Fifteen people were killed and at least one seriously wounded in a suspected drug-related shootout on Friday in a bar in northern Mexico, a region that has been brutalized by fighting between criminal gangs.

On Friday night, armed men entered the bar in Chihuahua, capital of Chihuahua state, and opened fire on various people inside suspected of involvement in drug dealing, the local attorney general's office said in a statement on Saturday.

A local press association said two men killed in the attack were journalists, adding to the tally of media casualties from Mexico's rampant gang violence.

The attorney general's office also said two other people were shot dead in a separate bar attack in the city, bringing Friday's death toll to 17. Read More

Chinese firm suspected in missile-linked sale to North Korea: U.S. official

(Reuters) - The United States believes a Chinese firm sold North Korea components for a missile transporter showcased in a recent military parade and will press Beijing to tighten enforcement of a U.N. ban on such military sales, a U.S. official said on Saturday.

The Obama administration suspects the Chinese manufacturer sold the chassis - not the entire vehicle - and may have believed it was for civilian purposes, which means it would not be an intentional violation of U.N. sanctions, the senior official said.

But such a sale - coming to light amid tensions over a failed North Korean rocket launch earlier this month - raises concerns in Washington on whether China is making enough of an effort to abide by the prohibition on weapons sales to Pyongyang.

The New York Times first reported on U.S. findings about the origin of parts of the transporter launcher system - essentially a large truck on top of which a missile is mounted - displayed in a parade in Pyongyang on Sunday. Read More

8 Americans Died of Heroin Overdose in Afghanistan, Army records show...and More are hooked

(CNN) -- Eight American soldiers died of overdoses involving heroin, morphine or other opiates during deployments in Afghanistan in 2010 and 2011, according to U.S. Army investigative reports.

The overdoses were revealed in documents detailing how the Army investigated a total of 56 soldiers, including the eight who fell victim to overdoses, on suspicion of possessing, using or distributing heroin and other opiates.

At the same time, heroin use apparently is on the rise in the Army overall, as military statistics show that the number of soldiers testing positive for heroin has grown from 10 instances in fiscal year 2002 to 116 in fiscal year 2010. Read More

UN monitors should be from neutral countries, like BRICS: Syria

DAMASCUS: Syria has said it was ready to facilitate UN monitors, but stressed that a majority of them should be from "neutral countries" like BRICS, which also includes India.

Syria also stressed that while it was committed to the UN-backed peace plan, the Western powers wanted it to fail due to their own agenda.

"The Syrian government is committed to the success of the UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan's six-point peace plan," Syria's Information Minister Adnan Mahmoud told a group of Indian journalists visiting Syria.

"We welcome the UN observers from countries like BRICS which look at the situation objectively. Syria is committed to the Annan plan and will facilitate the UN mission," he said. Read More

Neil Heywood: Chinese censors try to silence U.S. website behind ex-pat murder revelations with crippling cyber attack

Chinese government hackers are believed to be behind a crippling cyber attack on a US-based website that revealed how British businessman Neil Heywood was killed with cyanide on the orders of the wife of a Communist Party leader.

The Boxun website, run by Chinese dissidents, first reported that Mr Heywood was killed in his hotel room after agreeing to syphon almost £1 billion out of the country for Gu Kailai, the wife of rising Communist leader Bo Xilai.

The website said Old Harrovian Mr Heywood was killed after he asked for a bigger cut and threatened to expose Mrs Gu if his demands were not met.

The cyber attack on Boxun paralysed the website for hours on Friday, forcing it to find another internet hosting service to get back online.

The manager of the North Carolina-based site said Boxun had become a victim of a ‘denial of service’ attack, with hackers bombarding it with millions of requests per minute, causing it to crash. Read More

Police Launch Murder probe after 19 year is shot and killed outside the Hubb pub, Nottingham

A murder investigation has been launched into the death of a teenager believed to have been shot outside a pub.

The 19-year-old victim was taken to hospital following reports that a gun had been fired at around 3.30am outside The Hubb in Sherwood, Nottingham, where a party was taking place.

A spokesman for Notts police said a post-mortem examination was due to be carried out to find out how the teenager, who has not been named, died.

But it is believed he suffered at least one gunshot wound.

The pub and surrounding area, including a major route into Nottingham, was condoned off for several hours yesterday while forensic examinations were carried out. Read More

Dr Richard Holmes a weapons expert who worked with David Kelly: Found Dead in a Field after saying he was going for a Walk, Just like Dr Kelly did

A weapons expert who worked with Dr David Kelly at the Government’s secret chemical warfare laboratory has been found dead in an apparent suicide.

In circumstances strongly reminiscent of Dr Kelly’s own mysterious death nine years ago, the body of Dr Richard Holmes was discovered in a field four miles from the Porton Down defence establishment in Wiltshire. It is not yet known how he died.

Mr Holmes, 48, had gone missing two days earlier after telling his wife he was going out for a walk – just as Dr Kelly did before he was found dead at an Oxfordshire beauty spot in July 2003.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances in the latest case but revealed that Dr Holmes had ‘recently been under a great deal of stress’.

He resigned from Porton Down last month, although the centre yesterday refused to explain why.
Inevitably, the parallels between the two cases will arouse the suspicions of conspiracy theorists.

Despite Lord Hutton’s ruling eight years ago that Dr Kelly committed suicide, many people – among them a group of doctors – believe his inquiry was insufficient and have demanded a full inquest.

Some believe Dr Kelly, who kept an office at Porton Down right up until his death, was murdered. He was outed as being the source of a BBC report that Downing Street ‘sexed up’ evidence of Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction to justify going to war. Read More

Taha Muhammad the Second hate cleric who is allowed to stay - and he's so dangerous he was banned from AS-level chemistry

An Iraqi Muslim cleric suspected of being involved with Al Qaeda and radicalising young Britons has used the Human Rights Act to continue to live in the UK – despite Government efforts to deport him.

Taha Muhammad is regarded as one of Britain’s most dangerous security threats. He was even banned from studying AS-level chemistry because of fears he would use the knowledge to commit terrorist acts.

The decision to let him stay is another setback for Home Secretary Theresa May, already under pressure after attempts to deport Abu Qatada to Jordan descended into chaos.

The Government is so concerned about Muhammad, 35, that for several years he was placed under round-the-clock surveillance, given a curfew and banned from preaching.

But Muhammad says he cannot be deported to Iraq because he could be detained and tortured there.

He argues sending him back would be a breach of Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Judges at an immigration tribunal allowed him to stay even though the Home Office said they believed he:
  • Had links to several terrorist groups including Al Qaeda.
  • ‘Took part in both terrorist training and activities’ and had ‘considerable jihadi pedigree’.
  • Maintained contacts with Islamist extremists in Britain and abroad.
  • Provided support for the jihadist insurgency in Iraq.
  • Expressed extremist views. Read More

European court 'tipped off Abu Qatada over deadline to help him make last-ditch appeal to stay'.....No Wonder he was Smiling during his arrest

European human rights judges have been accused of ‘alerting’ radical Muslim cleric Abu Qatada to the fact he still had time to lodge a last-ditch appeal against deportation.

Furious Home Office sources last night claimed that it was the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) itself that privately told Jordanian-born Qatada that there was still the possibility of an appeal

But they say there was no similar attempt by the Strasbourg-based court to warn Home Secretary Theresa May of the impending deadline.

Senior sources in Mrs May’s department told The Mail on Sunday that the ECHR had reminded Qatada last Monday that he still had the option to appeal.

One said: ‘They took it upon themselves to go to Qatada’s legal team and say, “You haven’t appealed yet. Are you likely to appeal?” ’

Last night, the ECHR, headed by British judge Sir Nicolas Bratza, declined to comment on the claim. Read More

MI5 agents betrayed Libyan dissidents to Gaddafi's goons in rendezvous just yards from store

MI5 betrayed enemies of Colonel Gaddafi given refuge in Britain in a covert joint operation with Libyan spies working on UK soil, documents obtained by The Mail on Sunday reveal.

Gaddafi’s secret agents were supplied by MI5 with intelligence, secure mobile phones and a luxurious safe house in the heart of London’s Knightsbridge.

The extraordinary revelations emerge from hundreds of secret documents unearthed from Libyan spymasters’ archives after the Gaddafi regime was toppled – with British military help – last year.

Shockingly, they reveal tactics of intimidation and coercion – and expose the British agents’ specific fears that their actions might be reported by the press in the UK.

The documents disclose that MI5 betrayed the confidentiality that all refugees are promised when they apply for asylum, and told the Libyans that the targets could be threatened with deportation to Libya if they refused to co-operate.

The revelations will cause a political storm. David Davis, the senior Tory MP, said they made clear that the 2004 operation to arrange the ‘rendition’ of former Gaddafi opponent Abdel Hakim Belhadj from Bangkok to Tripoli was ‘merely the start of a continuing intelligence saga’. Read More

Governor George Fergusson a Senior Diplomat Mugged In West London Cemetery May Lose Sight

Doctors are battling to save the sight of a senior British diplomat who was mugged while walking through a cemetery in west London.

Bermuda's new Governor George Fergusson may lose his vision in his left eye after being attacked by a man in Hammersmith Cemetery, police said.

He received other facial injuries in the assault but managed to walk to a nearby hospital.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "The 56-year-old man was assaulted and robbed at around 7.30pm on Friday, April 20, while walking in Margravine Cemetery and Park, also known as Hammersmith Cemetery.

"He had suffered facial injuries, including a serious injury which threatens the sight in his left eye. He remains in hospital."

He added: "A small quantity of cash was taken and, at this early stage, officers are satisfied that robbery was the only motive.

"Officers from Hammersmith and Fulham Priority Crime Unit are investigating the incident."

It has been reported that Mr Fergusson was taking a short cut through the cemetery to get to a dinner party, and was attacked after getting out his mobile phone to check the address of his hosts. Read More

F1 Analysis: Sport Fuelled By Money

Formula One racing and its host nations have a symbiotic financial relationship, brought into sharp focus by the latest events in Bahrain.

For six years Formula One and Bahrain had an uncontroversial partnership which benefited both the sport and the state.

In 2004 Bahrain became the first Middle Eastern country to host a motor racing grand prix, in a move overseen by the Crown Prince.

A brand new circuit was built at a cost of around £100m, and the event brought attention and prestige to the tiny but wealthy nation, which has a population of just 1.2 million. Read More

Marissa Danielle Alexander: NAACP declares "stand your ground" fair for blacks, but not for others like Zimmerman; hypocrisy?

The NAACP's Jacksonville chapter has thrown its support behind a woman who will be sentenced Monday in a shooting where she claimed self-defense against an abusive husband under the state's Stand Your Ground law.

Marissa Danielle Alexander, 31, was charged with three counts of aggravated assault in August 2010 after she fired a single shot into the ceiling of her home during a dispute that somehow turned physical.

A judge denied her immunity in a Stand Your Ground hearing. And after a jury found her guilty, she faces a mandatory term of 20 years in prison.

"This is a clear case of domestic violence against Marissa," branch President Isaiah Rumlin said Friday. "After looking into it and studying the case, this is a clear case of Stand Your Ground as it relates to what she had to do on the date that she did it." more

Note: Wasn't the Sanford incident a clear case of violence against Zimmerman? Shouldn't Marissa and Zimmerman both be free due to domestic abuse / assault? There are grounds for both of them going free, yet bias seems to be the word of the day.

China military warns US of confrontation over seas

(Reuters) - China's military warned the United States on Saturday that U.S.-Philippine military exercises have raised risks of armed confrontation over the disputed South China Sea in the toughest high-level warning yet after weeks of tensions.

China's official Liberation Army Daily warned that recent jostling with the Philippines over disputed seas where both countries have sent ships could boil over into outright conflict, and laid much of the blame at Washington's door.

This week American and Filipino troops launched a fortnight of annual naval drills amid the stand-off between Beijing and Manila, who have accused each other of encroaching on sovereign seas near the Scarborough Shoal, west of a former U.S. navy base at Subic Bay.

The joint exercises are held in different seas around the Philippines; the leg that takes place in the South China Sea area starts on Monday.

"Anyone with clear eyes saw long ago that behind these drills is reflected a mentality that will lead the South China Sea issue down a fork in the road towards military confrontation and resolution through armed force," said the commentary in the Chinese paper, which is the chief mouthpiece of the People's Liberation Army. UN Passes Resolution On Syria Monitors...And so it Begins

The UN Security Council has unanimously passed a resolution allowing a 300-strong ceasefire monitoring mission in Syria, despite the strong doubts of many Western nations.

Under UN resolution 2043, the unarmed military observers will be sent if UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon decides it is safe for them to go.

Envoys from several western nations highlighted the risks of sending the monitors as violence has not stopped amid a ceasefire.

Foreign Secretary William Hague welcomed the vote decision and implementation of the UN and Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan’s six-point plan.

"This resolution increases the pressure on the Syrian regime to begin a transition to a democratic, plural political system. I welcome the fact that the council reaffirmed its full support for this goal," Mr Hague said.

"However, I remain extremely concerned that the Syrian regime is still failing to meet its commitments, and that there has been further violence and the use of heavy weapons since 12 April when a ceasefire should have come into effect." Read More

Alexander and Thomas Hunter Face Fraud Charges in the United States

A pair of British brothers are facing charges in the United States for allegedly defrauding investors out of more than 1.2 m US dollars (£745,000) through a bogus stock scheme.

Twins Alexander and Thomas Hunter were just 16 years old when they devised the "elaborate" online scam which fooled around 75,000 people, according to US officials.

In 2007 the brothers, reportedly from Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, are alleged to have invented a fictitious "stock picking robot" and claimed on a series of websites that the highly sophisticated computer trading programme could identify stocks that were poised to rocket in value.

They then targeted thousands of unsuspecting investors, mainly in the US, selling them "home versions" of the bogus software - named Marl - and annual subscription to a newsletter that listed the programme's stock recommendations, it is said.

However, the stocks were not generated by any technical analysis and were in fact those companies who were paying the brothers to promote, according to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), who has brought the civil action.

Legal papers filed in a New York federal court claimed investors paid 47 US dollars for newsletters listing Marl's stock picks and 97 US dollars for the home software. Read More
