UN Chief Says Syria Has Not Complied With Truce

The head of the United Nations has said Syria has not fully complied with terms of a ceasefire it agreed to.

UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon said an advance observer team has visited Deraa, however a request to visit beleaguered Homs had been denied for security reasons.

He said the situation in Syria is grave but he believes there is an opportunity for progress.

Mr Ban recommended the UN Security Council approve an expanded 300-strong observer mission.

He called for the three-month observation mission, and said there was a "chance for progress" despite the government's failure to implement a peace plan.

In a report to the security council, Mr Ban proposed that the mission "would greatly contribute to observing and upholding the commitment of the parties to a cessation of armed violence in all its forms". Read More
