Tonisha Allen, 1-year-old daughter shot while sleeping: 'A terrible thing'

Nearly five years ago, Tonisha Allen watched her big sister drive off after the two had spent the evening together.

It was the last time she would see her sister, who was gunned down hours later as she sat in a car in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side.

Early this morning, Allen was sleeping with her 1-year-old daughter when bullets pierced the wall of the back bedroom and hit her in the leg and the child in the head. Both Allen and her daughter Jaliyah survived, though relatives don't know the extent of damage the baby suffered.

"Four years ago we lost a daughter to violence," said Omiah Newman, the baby's grandfather, outside Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. "It seems like the thing has come back to haunt us again."
