Stranded Arabian Sea humpback whales dies

By A Staff Reporter — MUSCAT — The Environment Society of Oman (ESO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs and the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources, reported the stranding of an Arabian Sea Humpback whale in Al Qurm, 50 km south of Al Ashkharah, two days ago.

It was stranded alive, and the locals tried to push it back to the sea but were not successful in saving the whale, the ESO said in a statement.

This is the first humpback whale that the ESO whale and dolphin research team has been able to get to in time to get a species sample. Another sighting of a humpback whale floating between Hasik and Shuwaymiyah came in on the same day. The cause of the stranding and death is unknown.

Her Highness Sayyida Tania al Said, President of the ESO commented: “The death of two Arabian sea humpback whales is of great concern, as it represents 2 per cent of the estimated population. “Our research project funded by Renaissance SAOG is ongoing and will help yield results that will help us protect the remaining whale population.” Source
