Over 1000 families displaced in Cagayan flashflood, Philippines

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - About 1,200 families were displaced due to flash floods in the northern Philippine province of Cagayan, a senior government official said Tuesday.

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) executive director Benito Ramos said that flash floods occurred in Claveria and Sta. Praxedes towns following heavy rains during the past few days.

"A total of 31 out of 41 villages were inundated in Claveria, affecting 877 families. Ten villages were also inundated in Sta. Praxedes, affecting 338 families," he said.

Ramos said that erosion also occurred near seven houses in Bacsay village, Cataroan Norte town and about two hectares of irrigated rice and 22.5 hectares of vegetables were destroyed.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has already released relief assistance to the affected families, he said. Source
