Kabul Under Attack With Blasts Near Embassies

The Afghan capital Kabul appears to be under attack, with blasts near Western embassies and reports that militants have tried to enter the parliament building.

The Taliban has apparently claimed responsibility for the assault - adding that a group of armed suicide bombers were targeting Nato's headquarters, parliament and a number of diplomatic residences.

Witnesses said several explosion have happened near the US, British and German embassies and a Nato base.

One report even said a rocket-propelled grenade has hit the residence of the British diplomat in Kabul.

The Foreign Office confirmed in a statement: "There is an ongoing incident in the diplomatic area of Kabul. We are in close contact with embassy staff."

Afghan security forces, who are responsible for the safety of the capital, were scrambling to reinforce areas around the diplomatic enclave of the city centre.

More than 10 explosions in all shook the capital, and heavy gunfire continued to be heard more than 30 minutes after the initial blast.

There are also reports that several gunmen attempted to enter the parliament building, but were driven back by security forces and have taken cover in a nearby building. Read More
