Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper has said this weekend's Formula One Grand Prix in Bahrain should be cancelled because of continuing anti-government protests in the Gulf kingdom.
"I don't think British drivers should go and I don't think F1 should go ahead in Bahrain," the Labour MP said.
"Although it should be a matter for the sport to decide rather than for the Government and I don't think the Government should take the final decision, I do think ministers can express an opinion.
"That opinion should be very clear - it should not go ahead. It would send the wrong signal."
Practice runs for the race are due to begin this morning following a night of violence in the capital, Manama.
Anti-government activists hurled petrol bombs at security forces who responded with tear gas and stun grenades.
