Ducks 'died from botulism' at tuggerah Lakes, Australia

EXPERTS believe botulism is the cause of death of several ducks in Tuggerah Lake late last week and not contaminated water.

Residents reported sighting 12 dead ducks in the lake near Toukley bridge and asked the Wyong Council to investigate

A council spokesman said the deaths were an isolated occurrence and there was no cause for alarm.

Inquiries with Australian Seabird Rescue Service on causes of sudden death in Pacific black duck population indicated the most likely cause of death was botulism.

“Botulism is a naturally occurring phenomenon which is more common when there has been wet weather followed by warm weather,” a rescue service spokesman said.

“An inspection by Estuary Management staff revealed no dead fish in the area where the ducks were found which indicates that the cause of death is unlikely to be a contaminant present in the water.” Read More
