2 men on sinking houseboat rescued off crippled Fukushima nuke plant

FUKUSHIMA -- Two men aboard a houseboat that started to sink while sailing near the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant have been rescued.

The Fukushima regional coast guard rescued two men aged 34 and 40 from Kanagawa Prefecture on April 10. Both men were not hurt. At the time of the accident, they were navigating some 15 kilometers east of the tsunami-damaged Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant, within the government-designated nuclear no-go zone.

According to coast guard officers, an emergency call was made by the 19-metric ton houseboat "Suzuyoshi" at around 5:30 a.m. on April 10, saying the boat was taking on water. The crew members aboard the boat were quoted as telling coast guard officers that they entered the no-go zone after they felt the boat was sinking and were navigating toward land. Read More
